A True Story

I was expecting Alice to be brought to me by the social worker at any moment when the phone rang. It was the social worker, anxiously telling me that Alice had been snatched by her mother, and the police were out looking for them. I knew very little about Alice but I knew enough to be worried. Alice was just four years old and her mother was drug-dependent and mentally ill. Now she has made a desperate bid to keep her daughter. I prayed she wouldn’t do anything silly.

I heard nothing for three days then Alice was found safe but traumatised. The duty social worker brought her to me late at night. Alice was asleep in his arms. Swaddled in a blanket with only her little face showing she looked like a doll and immediately won a place in our hearts. But the following day when Alice began talking about the nights she was missing I was horrified when she said she had slept outside ‘with the wolves’ and then began describing a place I knew.
