What could I possibly say to a mother who’d recently lost her husband and son in tragic circumstances? I thought, as I drove to meet her for the first time. I’d no idea. As if the poor woman didn’t have enough to cope with and now her younger son, Jackson, was behaving so badly she had no choice but to put him into foster care.

As an experienced carer it was felt that I would be able to manage Jackson’s behaviour, but my family and I struggled. The only person who could reach him was his teacher who’d been in care as a child. Then one evening a chance phone call led to Jackson asking me what ‘abused’ meant. He began to tell me what had really happened and I called the police.
